Art and Soul

In our pursuits for Christ and deep study of theology, we run the risk of becoming serious, legalistic, religious, conservative, dry and judgmental.

One very potent guard against this risk is basking in the beauty of art – music, poetry, animation, and everything made to express an emotion or idea. Don’t forget how to FEEL while searching for Christ. Don’t forget to desire, dream, love, sing, dance, spin, scream and cry. It’s a good thing to be moved and inspired.

Thank you Arcade Fire and Pixar for reminding me of this.

Baby Class and Birthing Videos

On Saturday, Mark and I attended the much dreaded Childbirth class at our hospital to prepare ourselves for the coming of our baby girl.

As horrific as the videos were, we actually left the 8-hour class feeling really good and much more prepared for what awaits us. 

There are so many important moments and events in our life that don’t come with an instructional class which makes me think - childbirth must be the most important event of them all. 

We will observe many weddings, funerals, graduations, and anniversaries…but this special event of childbirth requires a miracle to make it happen.

There are some awesome things happening at our Church and in our lives. With everything in side of us, we feel like revival is imminent. Transition and change is sweeping through our lives…growth is everywhere.

Mark and I took a very difficult look at our lives yesterday. We know that we must prepare for this new time in our lives. It’s time to investigate seemingly innocent pleasures in our life that might lead to destruction down the road. As a result of that investigation…I bring everyone some very sad news…. 

I JUST CANCELLED OUR CABLE SUBSCRIPTION!!!

Yes, it’s true…we have been slaves to our TV – the reality shows, Japanese game shows, and mindless sitcoms. We have not been able find time to read our bibles, write songs, or spend time with God because we sit and stare at the TV for hours.

God helps us!  Oh yeah…no more SATC for me…

The SATC Dilemma

It’s FRIDAY & the Sex and the City movie comes out today!!! I already have my ticket and can hardly sit still in my seat. Tiffany even made me an awesome Carrie-like flower to wear to the premier! I’m going in style baby.

Unfortunately, this little HBO series from which I derive so much entertainment is somewhat controversial in church. Many call it “Smut in the City” and so I’m left with this dilemma…to watch or not to watch??

The characters are highly entertaining, the script is witty, the storyline is captivating, and the nudity is more comical than anything else. Maybe I am just trying to justify my little guilty pleasure – maybe you’re judging me right now! Who knows, but let’s just say, I’m going to see it and I’m sure I’m going to love it.

Indy, I love you!

I just finished watching the Indiana Jones trilogy for the first time. My life makes so much more sense now!!!

I love to find God in the most unlikely places…like the Indiana Jones trilogy.

Mark and I lead worship 4 times a week. We believe that we must come ready to worship in order to lead others into worship. This can be a VERY daunting task considering all of the obstacles we face each day that effect our attitudes/hearts which in turn, effect our worship leading.

At the end of the last movie, The Last Crusade, Indy must face several obstacles to get to the Holy Grail. Anything worth achieving will come with obstacles. You must have the knowledge and Word in your heart to face these obstacles every day(just like Indy knew how to be penitent before God and spell Jehovah in Latin).

This is the only way you can stand confident before the Lord and lead his people into the throne room.

Guilty Pleasure

Okay…so the guys were taking about music guilty pleasures on Sunday. They had some pretty funny ones (like “I’m With You” by Avril Lavine)…how about guilty pleasure movies.My favorite movie of all time is Empire Records…yes, the 90′s teen movie about kids who work in a record store. It’s filled with great music (some of my favorite) and addicting characters. I could recite this movie in my sleep. In a world of epic movies like LOTR, Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List – how I wish I could say one of these were my favorite.What’s your favorite guilty pleasure movie or TV show (um…S.A.T.C.)
