Valentine’s Day – Jimenez Style

2 Feb

redballoon1Valentine’s Day is like my second birthday. Even now, I’m counting down and trying to decide what we should do for our big V day.

Mark and I celebrate in a big way – here’s why…

Every year, my dad would send balloons and candy to me at school. It was a simple gesture, but I was usually the only little girl walking home with a beautiful and very public display of affection from my daddy. It always made me feel so special and loved. My dad always made me feel loved, but on this very special day, all of my classmates knew I was special in my daddy’s eyes. Even now as an adult, my dad sends me something for Valentine’s day.

Now, Mark has graciously carried on this tradition by taking me somewhere special, showering me with gifts, love, and attention. He has yet to fail to sweep me off of my feet. It’s not that I need the reminder of how much he loves me or that material things bring me joy – it simply reminds me of walking home with a smile on my face and a heart-shaped balloon around my wrist.

I refuse to let this holiday be something that greeting card companies made up (as so many jaded people have described it).

Do you celebrate V-day????

Ever since my girls were old enough to walk and talk we made this a special day. I decided one year that we would all get dressed up, my wife and girls in long fancy dress’s, and myself in a suit, we then would have a nice candle lit dinner with wine glasses (filled with grape juice) and place sweet notes under each others plates to read afterwards. Once dinner was finished we would give the girls a small gift and then it was dancing time. It started with me holding them and dancing, and then them stepping on my feet to dance, and now one is 5’11″ and the other is 5’5″, so now they hold me up. We still have a great time at Valentines, we spend very little money, but have so many memories.

That is really sweet. My husband and I havent been able to celebrate Valentines Day since we were dating. We usually do dinner and a movie a few days later. But when I was little my godfather sent me a dozen roses and wrote me poetry. I always felt soooo very special. Its my 2nd favorite holiday, but i dont get to celebrate it like I would love to.

I’ve never really celebrated valentine’s day. When Peter and I were dating we did a little bit, but nothing major. We both mutally decided that it just wasn’t for us. But, we completely spoil each other on birthdays and christmas! It gets pretty out of control!
