Technology Came Between Us

15 Sep

Mark and I love, love, love being connected. We love our gadgets and we love our internets. Twitter, blogging, flickr…We pride ourselves on our technorati scores and daily hits.

Yesterday though, we were spending time together and technology came between us. It became obvious that when we are with each other – even on a date – we are constantly checking email, sending twitter updates, or texting our friends.

Mark didn’t realize that it bugs me that he sends text messages to his friends while we are on a date, and I didn’t realize that it bugs Mark when I answer work emails on a date. Of course, it all came out in a slew of angry words and accusations until we both realized that we need to just be content on focusing on eachother when we are together. There’s a time to put the handheld device away and just be unavailable.

The thought of being unavailable to the world scares me, but the thought of being unavailable to Mark scares me even worse…

paul and i absolutely get that! we started leaving our cell phones at home. now, with derek, only one of us will bring our phone. usually that’s paul cause he is way more disciplined to let a phone call or txt go unanswered.

yup. that is brent and me. we really do need to put an end to it when we are on a date. we dont ignore eachother completely, we engage one another with what we’re doing. but probably to make us feel less guilty!

Teresa – that’s a really good idea! Maybe we will try it tonight.

Tam – I didn’t even realize that I answer work email when I’m out…I think I just go on autopilot.

I love this post. It’s so easy to fall into this techno trap. Charlie and I are leaving for the beach soon (our annual trip without the kids) and we will be leaving technology behind during our precious time together.

Thanks for the reminder of the importance to stay disconnected to the World Wide Web and connected to our invaluable relationships!

Oooh, I love being unavailable sometimes! I didn’t even open my computer for an entire day last week and I loved it! Even if I get important call; sometimes I like to just send them to voicemail because I CAN……and of course call back later.

    oooooh
Jake and I have this issue with my laptop and his tv. He is GLUED to the tv when he is home. Cement glued. And I am always on my laptop….sometimes sporadically as I go about my business here at home, or sometimes CONSTANTLY when we’re both hanging out on the couch.

It annoys me that he is glued to the tv and it annoys him I am glued to my laptop.

    Something to ponder for sure!
