A Scary Thought

7 May

I had a scary thought last night…when I become a mom, I will not be able to lay on the couch and watch TV all night, every night that I’m home.

Last night, as soon as I got home, I put on my PJs, jumped on the couch and started my great journey of TV watching. The line up included:

The Family Guy, Deadliest Catch, American Idol, Hell’s Kitchen, and
Law & Order: SVU – ahhhh, perfection.

It was a wonderful evening spent with Mark by my side (although he was on his Mac the entire time). I’m so ashamed of myself for not wanting to give up these silly shows for the sake of being a mom (or even for the sake of getting more done).

How much more time would I have to do great things if I just didn’t watch so much darn TV? As I laid my head on my pillow at precisely 10:00 pm, I thought of everything I have left to do this week. The list is so overwhelming, but my thoughts kept coming back to how excited I am to see The Office & 30 Rock on Thursday. I think I might have a problem….

And so it begins – the great experiment – I will not watch TV at all for one week. I will let you know of all of the things I did instead of watch TV. Maybe I will do something great this week. Maybe I will read my bible  or design some things for my church and the people I love. Maybe I will do that laundry that’s sitting in the corner of my room or start an exercise regimine - maybe, just maybe.

People (Christians) joke about how TV is a cop out for fasting. For me, it is a daggar in my side.

What could you not live without for one week??

I LOVE Deadliest Catch!!!! This isnt a suggestion for you to not fast TV for a week but I will tell you something that we have that has solved a lot of our problems – Tivo. We can record shows that we love and watch them whenever we want. I can do chores while I am watching TV and then rewind it if i missed something good. Last night we had things going on and so we didnt watch Deadliest Catch until 10pm. It is so nice to not have to be at the tv right when the show is on….
But the flip side of that. Curt and I differ on the TV issue. I would like to not have cable so that it would force to do something else…..he wants it. I will enjoy it for now…..and hopefully when we have kids we will watch it less and less….
Good job on fasting it for a while!……I want to know what you did instead :)

Ha! I have TiVo! and I just got worse!
I started recording more and more shows that I would probably never watch if I didn’t have TiVo. I’m outta control!

I’m excited for this week. I’ll definitely keep you updated.

Go get ‘em! Let us all know how the week w/o TV went! You, my dear, can do it!!!!!
The one thing I can’t live without during my week is Lost on ABC on Thursdays. Let no man or woman ever separate me from that show. All hell will break loose if they try.

I feel like I would have album upon album written on my guitar if it weren’t for television. I should try the same thing.

TiVo has definitely made it worse for us. We watched less TV before we had it. Now we just record everything and watch it later. We don’t actually watch anything live.

See Tivo made it batter for me because I didn’t feel rushed to get the kids in bed quickly and I don’t just watch tv for ever tring to find something I want.

Hey girl! I totally understand with doing without something. Lets do this, you can hold me accountable for candy.. And I can hold you accountable for watching tv.. Let’s talk about when we will start this.

I intentionally gave up tv about 7 years ago. I was having bad dreams & my pastor told me “What you put in your head has got to come out somehow.” So I gave up tv and the bad dreams went away.

I started watching again a couple of years ago, but after babies # 5 & 6 were born, I just didn’t have time anymore. So I don’t watch at all anymore (well, rarely). I do watch a lot of Noggin. Mind numbing.

The downside? I never know what’s going on in the world. SO all my friends know to call me if a hurricane is coming. lol

I had to laugh when I read “would I have to give up TV when I become a Mom”. Answer: “Yes”, and going to the bathroom alone, and sleeping past 6:00 AM and giving up things you need as a girl to buy pampers and baby wipes, and driving while watching your ipod, and quiet dinners, and clean floors and spare time.

But only for the next 21 years or so, then you can have your life back ……… sort of ……….

How’s that “no TV thing” going?

    I can’t live without coffee…..no way …… no how!

    @starwoodgal

Oh no- you just confirmed my greatest fears!

the no TV thing isn’t going so well. I’ll give an update tomorrow….in shame.
